What is Attitude?
An attitude is a hypothetical approach that represents an individual's degree of likings and dislikings for a specific item. Attitudes are generally positive or negative views of a person, place, thing, or event. People can also be uncertain or unable to decide about what course to follow towards an object, meaning that they at the same time possess both positive and negative attitudes toward the item in question.
Attitudes are also said to have judging power or making decisions. These are being developed on the ABC model (affect, behavior, and cognition).
The affective response is an emotional response that allows to express the personal priority for an item.
The behavioral response is about the behavioural characteristic of an individual.
The cognitive response is the individual's beliefs about the object.
Attitude Change
Attitudes are something which changes as a function of experience. Attitudes can be changed through persuasion. We should understand attitude change as a response to communication. There are some characteristics that refer to the person who receives and processes a message.
These include:
1. Intelligence
2. Self Esteem
3. Source
4. Message
Intelligence -It has been observed that more intelligent people are less easily persuaded by one-sided messages.
Self-esteem -It is sometimes thought that those higher in self-esteem are less easily persuaded, there is some evidence that the relationship between self-esteem and persuasibility is actually curvilinear, with people of moderate self-esteem being more easily persuaded than both those of high and low self-esteem levels The mind frame and mood of the target also plays a role in this process.
Source characteristics are expertise, trustworthiness and attractiveness. The credibility of a perceived message has been found to be a key variable if one reads a report about health and believes it came from a professional medical journal, one may be more easily persuaded than if one believes it is from a popular newspaper.
Message Characteristics: The nature of the message plays a role in persuasion. Sometimes presenting both sides of a story is useful to help change attitudes.
Attitude In Life
Attitude in life is very important. We can not live without it. But it is our duty to make our attitude positive and good. The attitude shows the personality of a person. It is very easy and simple to have positive attitude. The behavior of human being and results obtained or determined by the attitude that someone demonstrated. Therefore, positive attitude will bring pleasure and happiness. Positive attitude is that one can learn and practice but not an inborn element.
For positive attitude you should have positve mindset because what is in your mind , it influences your emotions so emotions are directly related to the actions which lead to effect the results. All these depend on the brain. What you are going to think continuously in brain is all which you are going to have in outcome. Focus on what you do will bring you excellent results on what you have focused on. For example, instead of thinking that public speaking is scary and painful, think about what you will get if you can speak in public fluently and effectively.
For positive attitude we should have a positive environment. Here Positive environment is that where you received lots of encouragement, advise and motivation by your parents, friends and people surrounding you.
Word will be internalize and become what you think. Positive words that “I like this job”, “I can do it” will bring you positive thinking. Negative words such as “I’m tired”, “I hate this job” will just let you feel what you said and will never bring you positive thinking. Therefore, practice using those positive words so that it will give you positive attitude.
Attitude is A Decision
Attitude is decision. It looks very strange but it is very obvious. when someone asks you to to do something for him/her, if you show positive attitude and show interest then it will show your decision to do it without clearly saying " ok i will do". But if you are showing no interset and not paying attention ,you are showing negative attitude and it will clearly tell hiom/mer that you are not going to do that without straightly saying that "i will not do".
Let us consider a glass half filled with water. Now there come two point of views:
1. Glass is Half Filled (Psitive Attitude)
2. Glass is Half Empty (Negative Attitude)
Although both views are true but we should think positively because attitude is decision.
So we can understand that all is attitude and the most we require is the positive attitude. Positive thinking brings positive attitude and this will then helpful for positive decisions and at the end we can live then a happy life with lot of happiness and with a feel of good and positive decisions.
